Giving away your vote

My friend made an interesting short doc inspired by the felony charges brought against a college student who tried to sell his vote on eBay. He was interested in the fact that it's illegal to sell your vote to the highest bidder, as individuals, but congressmen can do it with lobbyists all the time - and incidentally it's not illegal to give your vote away if there's no exchange of currency or alcohol. Anyway, if anyone is interested, here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWSXNVi0Lbs

WTF California???

I'm overjoyed that Obama won! I was with a large group of folks last night all cheering at the TV for hours. It was great.

But then we turned on the laptop and pulled up the ballot measure results. We approved too many bond measures on a deficit in both the state and local voting. Thank goodness we voted to make a dent in improving factory farming practices, and narrowly, to keep minors from running to have back alley abortions because they're afraid to tell their parents - I mean Palin's daughter has truly proved the benefits of abstinence education. So were the proponents of this bill really thinking that parental notification was going to lower teenage pregnancy.

But Prop 8??? We just changed the California constitution - the courts can't intervene and I am truly ashamed. Yes on 8 even called my home yesterday, misappropriating an Obama quote for their cause. How the hell does it hurt the interior of the state of California if a man and a man or a woman and a woman enter a partnership to stay together for life (or at least as long as the average straight couple - what's the divorce rate really?) and share their home and support eachother financially, physically, and emotionally. Will it hurt all those spinach growers when a gay couple throws a dinner party featuring their crop, or those winery owners when a gay marriage celebration pours their wine?

I am in a union. My partner happens to be male. The state of Massachusetts gave us a certificate. It happens to say marriage license at the top. I would be happy if they took it back and wrote civil union or state partnership or something representing what it is. We're not married in the eyes of any lord(s). We're married in the eyes of the government so we can pay taxes together, run a single household where economics can be mixed, and so we had an excuse to have a big party. Oh and it doesn't hurt that I wear a ring so I can shove it in the faces of skeazy guys when they hit on me. I don't know if the solution is to have each church call it what it is in their eyes but then let the government define partnerships under a separate name. Every married couple has to file legal as well as religious documents. Could we relabel the legal ones to call it what it is? That probably wouldn't solve the problem because there are too many close minded people out there,, but it would live up to the separation of church and state that is mandated. I want to be united - I call it marriage out of habit, but I don't need to be married. I need to be bonded, because it's important to us and it gives us rights in the eyes of the government, but certainly not any religious institution or entity.

Thanksgiving

We'll be in Philly for Thanksgiving. We're considering a day trip to DC to see folks. I can't post a poll so I'll have to do it by comments -

Who will be around and up to hanging on Saturday November 29th?

Who will be around and up to hanging on Sunday November 30th?

Lunch? Dinner? Mid-day?

Brickskeller? Bennigans?

I could go on and on...We'd like to try to arrange things with the folks to borrow a car (it's about 2 hours, right?) so we've got to plan it soon.

Supporting a non-profit I'd love to see succeed

Hi all my lovely friends on LJ. I seriously have not logged into this site in I'm guessing close to a year. Not that I don't want to know what's up in everyone's lives because I so do and I hope to find some more time soon to at least glance at LJ...time is always the limiting factor, isn't it? But in the meantime, I'm trying to support a friend and her non-profit, which in turn may one day help me out...

A friend of mine has started a non-profit called Patron of the Arts (POTA), which intends to provide free grants to filmmakers and artists in need of funding. As you can imagine, this non-profit could lead to some wonderful opportunities for myself and other struggling artists out there (damn, I want to quit my day-job more than ever, but that's another post, nay another journal, unto itself I think). POTA has made it to the final round of a competition to win a $20,000 start-up award. The winner is determined by the most votes received by this Sunday, August 31st. I very much want to see POTA succeed so I figured I'd ask any friends who might be like minded to vote for them. You do need to register at Ideablob to vote, but it takes about 30 seconds and the email received from the site is negligible (I think I get invited to vote once a month or something). Here's the link to vote and/or register then vote:

http://ideablob.com/ideas/2890

I miss you all as I always do!!! (well, except for those few west coasters I see every so often, who I only miss when I'm not seeing them:-) We're hoping to get to DC around the holidays this year, so I'll keep folks posted.

What a week

So two SAG vouchers down...hopefully #3 will be mine tomorrow. I got off-set after a 14 hour day and got home to find we were on the guest list for the Fredericks of Hollywood fashion show...so I threw my stuff down, changed and we walked back to basically where I'd been all day (Hollywood & Vine) and went to the Palladium. Us Weekly, E-News and others shot us on the red carpet and in we went. Corey started feeling sick on the walk there but seemed ok. So I hit the open bar, the candy bar (yay, Pop Rocks) and people watched...then Corey started getting really sick so we left 1/2 way through the fashion show (saw the Scarlett Johansson designed corset among others) and missed the Foo Fighters set and the Dita Von Teese strip tease which I'm really sad about. Did see the Silver Sun Pickups and spotted Amanda Bynes and the kiddies from High School Musical before leaving...woohoo. Stayed up wth my boy til he was ok at 2 and was up at 5:30!

Working with Ginnifer Goodwin, Busy Phillips, and Justin Long. No clue who will be there tomorrow. Sorry Rudes boys...didn't get to see Scarlett yet...closest thing was the corset at the fashion show.

Last weekend was just awesome. I needed that. I needed to see my Rudes, needed to be in a relaxing setting and needed to ignore everything LA for a weekend. Thanks to treyhawk for being my roomie and to everyone for hanging out.
GALVESTON ROOMMIE NEEDED

Hey kiddos...those who are planning to be in Galveston Island for nuptuals the 3rd weekend in October --- I'd really like to find someone to split a room with. Corey has to go to another wedding in Rhode Island that weekend (we tried to both go to both weddings but the flights out on Sunday can't get us to Providence on time for #2 and Corey's old friends with the groom). And this is the 4th out of 7 weddings we're traveling for in a year's time...so saving $$$ by sharing a room would be awesome. I don't snore...promise.

I can get great plane tix right now, but don't know when to fly...when will other folks be there --- Friday morning or evening? Leaving Sunday morning or evening? or Monday? I want to hang with all of you I haven't seen in almost a year or more! And how are people getting from the airport to the resort and back? I'm hoping not to rent a car...

I'll probably post again tomorrow when more people are likely to get on LJ, but in case I can get some answers today so I can purchase my tix...I wanted to write early and often.

Yes, this should partially probably go in my acting journal, but I'm at work and I have to make this quick-ish, so hear goes.

A recent comment in my myspace (thanks findingjuliet made me realize that as of today, it now says I'm 19, not 18...I'm wondering if 18 +/- a decade (and we all know what direction that goes in) is too hold to keep pretending I can do 18 to look younger, but I don't truly want to know the answer.

New agent, new pilot (now in Comedy Central's hands for consideration and starring Jackie "The Jokeman" Martling), and now a new age.

Time flies...I don't get on here enough...and I see I've missed days of WWYD nominations, but who knows if I'd have time to vote in the real thing. Maybe tonight as a birthday treat I'll give myself some LJ reading time and see if I can still get in on the action and hear all about what everyone has been up to.

Hope to see you all soon...somehow, somewhere!

Lost

Lost will give me nightmares for awhile. And it's not the 8-legged creatures, which everyone knows I am most definitely not a fan of. But holy shit, she watched the dirt get piled on. And I'm lying awake at night trying to figure out the packing density of the dirt and the potential for displacement.

I assume that's not the end of them and it won't just be flashbacks...I'm annoyed they included those characters in the show at all. Bringing in tailies made sense. We were wondering what happened to the back of the plane. Of course all of the ones that made it to the beach are dead except for Bernard, so it was kind of a waste. But people who had been there the whole time? They better enhance the overall arc of the story really well or I'm going to be pissed.
Home...and Firefly

...because suddenly the LA metro has become the most unreliable public transport I've ever taken. It's usually really good, but 3 times in the last week, stations have become impassible and at least two of those times it was due to gas leaks. Not sure about the 3rd. The two previous times it affected my commute with delays, but I could get where I needed to be. Today, not so lucky, and it took me over an hour to go one stop, be told to get off the train and wait for a train to take me back to my stop so I could walk home. So not interested in driving downtown and paying 10 buck for parking when I have nothing useful to do at work anyway, so I'm home. I just did about an hour of work that was emailed to me, but I'll need to make up the rest of the time later in the week...which is ironic because I would have just been sitting at my desk today doing nothing almost certainly because everyone is light on work right now, but because I couldn't make it in, I need to go in on one of my days off and sit there doing nothing (unless work suddenly materializes) so I can count the hours...I'm not using my vacation time for this shit.

In other news, we finished watching Firefly last night and watched the bonus features. I almost started crying...I love that show. Why'd it have to end? I need to go back and rewatch Serenity now that I've actually seen the show. At one point in the bonus features, one of the crew mentioned that they hope it'll be made into a movie that'll spin off into a show again. Well, they got the movie, but thanks to certain events in it, I can't imagine it being made into a show ever again...which is just so sad, but I'm sure Joss & co. were aware of that when they chose to write it the way it was written. But damn, I want more Serenity:-)

Happy Holidays!!!

So I had fully intended to try to get on LJ and ask for addresses to send out holiday cards, but sadly time took it's toll and here we are on December 21st and even though I'm off until Jan. 2 (woohoo!!!) my mom is in town and we leave on Saturday to go to Indiana and then Philly, so time is still not my friend.

However, I may still have time to get a few out beyond the requisite family ones I managed to do in little bits of spare time. If anyone would like, send me your addy at sjelice at gmail and I will do my bestest. I like to get in touch with everyone around this time of year...it's a good time to check-in and renew contacts, but life has just been so busy.

For all of you who don't get pretty paper cards from me, know that I love and miss you too.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND THEIR FRIENDS, AD INFINITUM.

I haven't had any time for LJ, and god knows I didn't need another distraction, but Corey got me going on Facebook this weekend because a lot of our friends from college are on there. I'm hoping to balance my e-communication now that I'm working the day job only 20 hours a week, but with filming last week there was even less time than normal. I'm only finding time now because I'm on a boring conference call and posting on my phone.

Anyway, I've now got a Facebook account so let me know if you're on there. I'm also on myspace...sjelice.

I'd love updates from folks if anything important has happened in the last month or two that you'd think I'd be interested in.

Audition song suggestions needed

I've been asked to audition for something this weekend which requires 16 bars "blues or power ballad" (I'm thinking Poison doesn't count here) and 32 bars uptempo R&B, with sheet music. Now I can head on over to Sam French, but I need some clue as to what it is I'm searching for.

Anyone know of songs that fall into either of those categories for which sheet music might exist at the mecca or all sheet music repositories?

Halloween and IMDB

I know, two subjects that don't really go together, but I'm multitasking, so hah!

First off, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

Secondly, for those of you who haven't seen yet, cause I posted it to my acting journal only previously, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2299155/.

I was thinking, with so many of the Rudes on there now, it would be pretty cool to have a trivia that links us on our pages. "In the Rude Mechanicals (MD) with x,y,z,etc." or something along those lines. Right now, the Rudes I know are on there beside me: reazik, whimmydiddle, cavenessity, spirit_o_fire, chickenhat, metalcrowe, and myoffenseisrank (got to tell us which profile to link to:-).

If I missed you or someone else, let me know.
Time...

Wow, I could use more time...I really want to watch Studio 60 and have it downloading but haven't seen it yet because I have NO TIME. I haven't had a chance to check breakdowns in a few days. Bad actress...

I had two PMs fighting over my time at work yesterday. It's a bit overwhelming and I'm taking Thursday off and I'll probably still work overtime this week. I finally have vacation time and I'm not even allowed the chance to waste it away.

I don't want to be jobless, but I keep thinking maybe I need to quit for sanity's sake. This is not what I want to do. I don't have goals here, even though I'm being forced to set them and meet them by putting in my own time to become a PE and bullshit like that.

I'd like to cut down my hours to 20, but I don't think they'll go for it...especially when they're trying to get me to work 40 right now. I need to bring this up soon though or I'll probably quit outright from a nervous breakdown.

Argh......and yes, I just wanted to post something because I wanted to update the Captain's log on Pirate's day.
